Four women showing hair types from wavy to coily - Type 2, Type 3, and Type 4 curl patterns

What Is Hair Typing?

Hair typing is a classification system originally developed by celebrity stylist Andre Walker. It categorizes hair into four main types — straight (Type 1), wavy (Type 2), curly (Type 3), and coily (Type 4) — with subcategories A, B, and C based on the diameter and tightness of the curl.

Knowing your type helps you choose the right products, techniques, and routines — but it's not the whole picture. At TRYBE, we believe your texture (fine, medium, or coarse) and porosity (how your hair absorbs moisture) are just as important as your curl pattern when selecting the right products. That's why all of our formulas use low-molecular weight technology that penetrates deeper regardless of your pattern — no heavy buildup, just pure hydration where it matters. Browse our full range of products to see the difference.

Type 2: Wavy Hair (2A–2C)

Wavy hair lives in the sweet spot between straight and curly. It forms an "S" shape that can range from barely-there bends to almost-curly spirals. Wavies often struggle with flatness at the roots and frizz at the ends, and using products that are too heavy can pull waves right out.

Type 2A — Gentle Waves

Your hair has a loose, tousled bend that usually starts mid-length. It often looks straighter on top and gently waves toward the ends. Think effortless beach waves that come naturally. 2A hair is the finest of the wavy types, making it prone to being weighed down by heavy creams or oils.

What it looks like: Loose "S" bend, mostly at the ends. Fine to medium strands. Minimal volume at the root.

Type 2B — Defined Waves

The wave game gets stronger with 2B. You'll see a more defined S-shape that starts a bit closer to the root, with more body and a natural tousled texture. Frizz starts to become a real player here, especially in humidity.

What it looks like: Noticeable S-shaped waves throughout the mid-lengths and ends. Medium texture. Some frizz around the crown.

Type 2C — Almost Curly

If you've ever been confused about whether you're wavy or curly, you're probably a 2C. Your waves are thick, well-defined, and start right from the roots. Some strands may even form loose ringlets. Frizz is a daily companion.

What it looks like: Thick, pronounced S-waves from root to tip. Some loose spiral curls mixed in. Significant volume and frizz.

TRYBE Routine for Wavy Hair

Wavies need lightweight hydration that won't flatten their pattern. The key is moisture without weight. Struggling with frizz? Browse our Frizz Control collection.

  1. Cleanse with Wavy Shampoo — our sulfate-free formula gently cleanses without stripping the natural oils your waves need to hold their shape.
  2.
  3. Condition with Wavy Conditioner — lightweight enough to hydrate without pulling your waves straight. Focus on mid-lengths to ends.
  4.
  5. Protect with Leave-In Conditioner — apply sparingly to damp hair. A little goes a long way with fine-to-medium waves.
  6.
  7. Define with Curl Defining Creme — scrunch into damp hair to encourage S-formation without crunch or stiffness.
Pro Tip: Don't touch your hair while it dries. Scrunching too much leads to frizz. Let it air dry or use a diffuser on low heat, and scrunch out any crunch once fully dry.

Type 3: Curly Hair (3A–3C)

Curly hair is defined by springy, well-formed ringlets and spirals. The curl starts at the root and maintains its shape down the strand. Type 3 hair has natural volume and bounce but tends to be drier than wavy hair because the scalp's natural oils can't travel down the twists and turns of each curl.

Type 3A — Loose Curls

You have big, loose ringlets about the circumference of a large marker. Your curls are bouncy with a natural shine, but they can fall flat if products are too heavy or if you touch them too much. Definition is usually pretty good right out of the shower, but holding that shape throughout the day is the challenge.

What it looks like: Wide, loose spiral curls. Shiny with some frizz. Can appear stretched or limp by end of day.

Type 3B — Classic Ringlets

This is the quintessential corkscrew curl, about the width of a Sharpie marker. 3B curls are dense, springy, and full of personality. They have more volume and less shine than 3A, and frizz is a constant consideration. Your curls can look completely different wet versus dry due to shrinkage.

What it looks like: Well-defined corkscrew spirals. Dense, voluminous. Noticeable difference between wet and dry length.

Type 3C — Tight Spirals

The tightest of the Type 3 category, 3C curls are compact spirals about the diameter of a drinking straw or pencil. They pack incredible volume and density but are the driest of the curly types. Without proper moisture, 3C hair can become brittle and prone to breakage.

What it looks like: Tight, densely packed corkscrew curls. Lots of volume. Significant shrinkage when dry.

TRYBE Routine for Curly Hair

Curly hair craves moisture and definition. Our low-molecular weight technology penetrates deep into the curl without the heavy buildup that weighs down ringlets.

  1. Cleanse with Curl Defining Shampoo — wash 2–3 times per week. Our lightweight formula cleanses deeply while preserving your curl's natural moisture.
  2.
  3. Condition with Curl Defining Conditioner — let it sit for 2–3 minutes. Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb while conditioner is in, working from ends to roots.
  4.
  5. Treat with Scalp Serum — a healthy scalp means healthy curls. Our serum addresses itch, flakiness, and oil balance right at the root.
  6.
  7. Protect with Leave-In Conditioner — apply to soaking wet hair for maximum absorption. This is your moisture lock.
  8.
  9. Style with Curl Defining Creme — section your hair and rake through with fingers, then scrunch to encourage curl clumping.
Pro Tip: The "squish to condish" technique works wonders for Type 3 hair. While conditioner is in, cup your curls and squeeze water upward to help product absorb. Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle.

Type 4: Coily Hair (4A–4C)

Coily hair is the tightest curl texture and, without question, the most versatile. From tight coils to Z-shaped zig-zags, Type 4 hair can be shaped, stretched, twisted, and styled in endless ways. It's also the most fragile. With fewer cuticle layers and the tightest bends, it needs the most moisture and the gentlest handling.

Type 4A — Defined Coils

4A hair forms tight, springy coils about the circumference of a crochet needle. You can still see a defined curl pattern, and your hair has decent curl clumping when properly moisturized. Of all the Type 4 subtypes, 4A retains moisture the best — but "best" is relative. You still need way more hydration than Types 2 or 3.

What it looks like: Tightly wound, visible S-shaped coils. Springy when stretched. Significant shrinkage (up to 50%).

Type 4B — Z-Pattern Coils

Here the pattern shifts from an S-shape to a Z-shape with sharp angles rather than rounded curves. 4B hair is densely packed with very fine, delicate strands that can tangle easily. The coils are less defined than 4A and appear fluffy or cotton-like when dry. Handle with extreme care when detangling.

What it looks like: Z-shaped zig-zag pattern rather than round coils. Very dense. Fine strands that are easily damaged.

Type 4C — Tight Zig-Zags

The tightest texture on the spectrum. 4C hair may not show an obvious curl pattern at all. The zig-zags are so tight and densely packed that the hair can appear patternless or sponge-like up close. It experiences the most shrinkage of any hair type (up to 75%), meaning your hair may be significantly longer than it looks. Moisture is non-negotiable.

What it looks like: Extremely tight zig-zag pattern, often not visible without close inspection. Maximum volume and shrinkage. Very fragile.

TRYBE Routine for Coily Hair

Coily hair is the thirstiest of all hair types. Our formulas are intentionally lightweight so they absorb fully. Thick, heavy products sit on the surface and create buildup. Our low-molecular weight technology delivers moisture where coils need it most. Concerned about scalp health? We have targeted solutions for that too.

  1. Cleanse with Deep Moisture Shampoo — wash once a week or every 10 days. Your scalp's natural oils are precious, so preserve them.
  2.
  3. Condition with Deep Moisture Conditioner — leave on for at least 3–5 minutes. Detangle ONLY with conditioner in, using fingers or a wide-tooth comb from ends to roots.
  4.
  5. Treat with Scalp Serum — keep your scalp healthy and balanced. Address dryness, flaking, or itching at the source.
  6.
  7. Protect with Leave-In Conditioner — be generous. Apply to soaking wet hair in sections for full coverage.
  8.
  9. Seal with Intense Moisture Creme — this is your moisture sealant. It locks hydration into each coil to prevent dryness throughout the week.
Pro Tip: The LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) is a game-changer for 4A–4C hair. Apply Leave-In Conditioner (liquid), follow with Scalp Serum (oil), then seal with Intense Moisture Creme (cream). Sleep on a satin pillowcase to preserve moisture overnight.

Beyond Pattern: Understanding Hair Texture

Your curl pattern tells you about the shape of your hair, but your texture tells you about the thickness of each individual strand — and this is actually more important for choosing the right products.

How to Find Your Texture

Take a single strand of hair and hold it between your fingertips:

  • Fine: Hard to see or feel. The strand is thin and delicate. Fine hair gets weighed down easily and needs lightweight formulas. Use smaller amounts of TRYBE styling products.
  •
  • Medium: Visible and easy to feel. Not too thick, not too thin. Medium texture is the most versatile. Use standard amounts as directed.
  •
  • Coarse: Thick, strong, and easily felt between fingers. Coarse hair can handle richer products and takes longer to dry. Don't be shy with moisture — our hydration collection has you covered.

Understanding Hair Porosity

Porosity describes how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture. It's determined by the condition of your hair's cuticle layer — the overlapping scales on each strand.

The Water Test

Drop a clean strand of hair into a glass of room-temperature water. Wait 2–4 minutes:

  • Low Porosity — Hair floats on top. The cuticle is tightly sealed, making it hard for moisture to get in, but once it does, it stays put. Your hair may feel like products just sit on top without absorbing.
TRYBE Tip: Our lightweight formulas are ideal for low porosity hair. The low-molecular weight technology is specifically designed to penetrate tight cuticles.
  •
  • Medium (Normal) Porosity — Hair sinks slowly to the middle. Your cuticle is balanced, so moisture gets in and stays in at a healthy rate. You're living the porosity dream.
TRYBE Tip: You can use most of our products as directed. Focus on maintaining your balance with consistent routines.
  •
  • High Porosity — Hair sinks quickly to the bottom. The cuticle is raised or damaged, so moisture enters easily but escapes just as fast. Your hair may feel dry no matter how much product you use.
TRYBE Tip: Layer products (Leave-In + Creme) to seal moisture in. Our Scalp Serum helps create a protective barrier.
